Hi, my name is Quinten. 25 from KCMO.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

I am very new to chickens. We (my girlfriend and I) started raising our first little flock of 4 straight run chicks about 6 months ago. We ended up with an even split of 2 pullets and 2 cockerels. We were able to re-home the roosters. Unfortunately, we lost our hens just recently to a predator burrowing under the run attached to the coop at night.
Though we are devastated by the loss of our little girls, I have modified the coop run and we are hoping to start again.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

Currently, zero.

(3) What breeds do you have?

Past: Rhode Island Reds (they were very friendly, we enjoyed them) Currently looking into buying 3-4 Lohmann Browns.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

Researching prior to pulling the trigger on our first little flock.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

My girlfriend and I, along with our two dogs (Kanga & Joey) enjoy spending time camping, kayaking, hiking, rock climbing, going to the dog park, playing with the chickens, and sometimes just chilling with a good movie and a big bowl of popcorn.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Well, looks like I got a little ahead of myself with question 5.
As I shared above, we have two dog children.

We are recent homeowners in Kansas City, MO.
She is a Veterinary Technician and I am a Network Administrator.
I converted an old rabbit hutch I built for a friend into our coop, and built on a run (and nesting box that is not in this picture). We also let the chickens free range in our privacy fence enclosed yard, during the day.
(that's me in the coop. I suppose I'm a rather strange looking chicken.)

Welcome to BYC, Quinten. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction.) Thanks for posting the pics. I'm sorry about the loss of your hens to a predator. It's always sad to lose some of our flock. There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html on predator proofing your chickens. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is also loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Thank you for the welcome! and thank you, Michael for the tips. We're hoping the further precautions will create a sort of chicken "Fort Knox" :)

glad you have joined us.

But so sorry about your losses.

Do take the previous advice and predator proof your coop before your next try. Make sure you swap the chicken wire for hardware cloth and bury it around the perimeter.

Feel free to ask questions, we're here to help.

Wishing you better luck in the future.

Sunflour speaks the truth. Replace the flimsy chicken wire with 1/2" hardware cloth securely attached to a strong framework. No tinker toys.. Chickens can be fragile, predators are not. You also need a wire skirt around under, your run to keep diggers out, a top to prevent jumpers, climbers AND attacks from raptors. That's just for starters.
