(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
My grandma always had chickens when I was little and I spent a bunch of time with her. We've been wanting chickens of our own for a few years now, but now that are boys are old enough to help and get involved with 4H we figured it was finally the right time! We bought them a chicken coop kit for Christmas and intend to add a larger run to it.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Currently zero. We plan to buy 8 chicks in the spring with the intention of ending up with at least 5-8 chickens.
(3) What breeds do you have?
None yet, but we are interested in colorful egg layers.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
We are looking forward to teaching our boys the fundamentals of animal care. We already compost and plant a yearly garden so this was the next logical step in our little hobby farm.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
As mentioned, we garden in a large raised bed. We also compost. Eventually we'd like to get in to bee keeping as well. We own 60 acres that we've entered into the state forestry (here in Indiana), and we intend to plant a few acres of wild flowers, fruit/nut trees, and food plots for the various wildlife. We also love to cook/bake, read, and travel.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We have 4 boys, ages 13, 5, 3, and 18mos. My husband is an engineer and loves to build things (soon adding a fancy coop to that list lol). I work for a small town Ford dealer. We want to get more heavily into hobby farming, but chickens are our first step. We don't currently have enough land to fence for donkeys or goats, though we'd love to have both. Other pets currently include an axolotl, 3 fish tanks, and a few kitties.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC on Facebook first in looking for chicken groups to join. Literally just found and joined today! Looking to get advice and information on getting started.
