I grew up on a medium sized farm. We had a little of everything back then including chickens, turkeys, hogs, cows, goats, dogs, and horses. When I was 18 I decided to leave the country behind and moved to the big city(Atlanta). I never realized how much I missed the farm life until I was around 30.
After finally getting married, my wife and I decided we needed to get out of the city. Last fall we bought our hopefully forever home and moved in with our 45lb rescued dog named Cupcake. We have 7 acres that are far enough away to not be bothered by the hustle and bustle, but close enough to occasionally go into town and have dinner. Almost immediately I knew I wanted chickens.
We started with 3 Golden Comets. They were about a year old and have been laying consistently since day three on our farm. I built a small coup and we were content until spring. That's when things got interesting.
First I purchased 6 Leghorn chicks. Then I took my wife to the local farm supply. That day we returned home with 3 Welsummers, 3 Speckled Sussex, 2 Golden Wyandottes, 2 Silver Wyandottes, and 6 Ameraucana. Another larger coup was built. We also rescued another dog, his name is Pickle and he is a Catahoula Mix.
Through the spring and summer we have now added a few other animals. 20 Jumbo Brown Cortunix Quail, 20 Texas A&M Quail, 6 goats, 1 miniture donkey, 8 Plymouth Rocks, and just today I added 6 Guinea keets.
After spending a lot of time on this site doing research along our journey, I finally decided to signup. Hopefully I can share some of what I have learned to help others.
