I'm new and just thinking about keeping chickens. I want to do a lot of research before I commit myself. I look forward to meeting other chicken people and sharing your knowledge.
Hi there and welcome to BYC.
You used the right word.
Commit.
It is a commitment.
And a responsibility.
And there’s work that must be done no matter what the weather, and on days that you’re busy with other things, or not feeling well. Your chickens will be dependent upon you for shelter, food, and protection against predators.
You have to think about things like who will take care of them if you travel.
But keeping chickens comes with a lot of rewards too.
They are interesting, funny, and smart creatures.
They have tons of personality and will make you laugh every day. Just hanging out and observing them is a lot more entertaining than even the best shows on tv. You will be surprised at how fast you’ll become attached to them.
Being a good animal steward is a job to take seriously because sometimes difficult situations arise and heartbreaking decisions have to be made, out of duty and love.
Stick around and learn as much as you can and get to know people here.
Don’t be afraid to ask as many questions as you want. There are NO dumb questions. No one will criticize you for asking.
Everyone starts at the beginning.
BYC is a real community made up of a friendly bunch of chicken keepers (many thousands) from all over the world who are generous of both their time and knowledge.
On this link you'll find lots of information on almost every aspect of keeping birds - from coop building ideas, to incubating eggs - https://www.backyardchickens.com/articles/
There’s a link on the page above to the Learning Centre - it’s a great resource. If you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.
