I presently have one rooster and two hens, but am expecting six more hens soon. My chickens free range during the day and go into their coop at night. I have five dogs, all rescues, who pay no attention to the chicks. I have just rescued two starving puppies, about 4-5 months old. As soon as they saw the chickens they made a dash for them, each puppy caught one of the chickens and had begun pulling feathers out by the time I was able to get to them. Poor rooster has no tail feathers left. I'm now keeping the chickens in their pen during the day. I found this forum to get ideas on how to train the puppies to leave the chickens alone. If I can't train them, the only option will be to take them to a shelter, which I don't want to do. Many thanks for all the good suggestions that I have read. I'll start working with them right away.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you've joined us!

Dogs and chickens can be a challenging thing. Since they're both puppies, hopefully you will be able to train them to leave the flock alone. When we first brought chicks in to our home, we had 3 dogs, an 8 year old Siberian husky, 9 year old terrier mix, and 1 year old bulldog mix. Our husky broke in to the brooder and killed every one of the chicks. The other two helped once the brooder was open. Our husky was never able to be trained against her prey drive and always had to be watched closely. She passed at at 12 years old early this year. Our other two dogs were both able to be trained. The terrier mix took a little bit as he was drawn to the little ones, even after he learned to leave the big ones alone but he eventually learned. Our bulldog mix learned that she likes to eat chicken poop :sick. She began hanging out with the flock just to clean up after them. Hopefully you'll have good results with your training!
