My parents had decided to get chickens about 4 years ago and got chicks 3 years ago that we raised IN MY BEDROOM! Believe me when I say that was an unforgettable and joyful experience despite the unceasing smell of chicken poo. Plus I could tell people I had 3 chicks in my bedroom which always stirred up peoples imaginations especially when they realized I meant chickens. I had never really put much thought into this massive community until just recently but had always loved those quirky birds, especially when they are chicks and are super fluffy! Recently we hatched out a few eggs from someone else in the area and some from my aunt and uncle who got chickens with their house (bonus!) And due to the weather in our area being so unpredictable at that time of year the still air incubator we got from the same people we got eggs from couldn't cope very well. At least the small forced air one seemed to do OK with a 100% hatch rate of 2/2 chicks. In the other incubator 2 gorgeous chicks hatched, one egg pipped early and dried out and the rest just couldn't pip except one which my mother helped hatch after she noticed it was stuck and couldn't zip. It was so small and frail it managed to get a slipped tendon and it all went down from there. Enter Backyard chickens, and I quickly was able to pick up everything I would need to help the poor chickie have a good life and even enough miscelaneous poultry wisdom to be able to teach my mother who has the chicken encyclopedia and several other chicken books a thing or two, mostly on the coloration and standards side. I kept the chick alive in a hobble and tried to get its little bitty toes into a boot to uncurl them but couldn't. I just coudn't let him/her go. It finally ended with an impacted crop and a neck too weak to support the head which eventually broke when it slumped over to the other side and it took its heart wrenching final breaths and final peeps. After having to endure the TORTURE of cleaning up and disposing of the chick I decided I could not leave it there and decided I wanted my own chickens rather than just having the privelage of naming and caring for some of my families flock. I decided to hunt down the best place for me to get some great Silkies which I had grown fond of but never thought to get, from a brief but lovely encounter with a bizarre showgirl Silkie a couple years back. Again BYC was my #1 source of Silkie knowledge. The day before I joined BYC chicken math had me in its grip and I bought 6 chickies from TSC, 5 Silkies of currently mystery coloring, and 1 probably polish that my mother thinks is buff laced but I think maybe porcelain since it is so cream colored.

Enough storytelling though. A word of warning about myself and my interactions with everything is that my sight is nowhere near perfect but thankfully colors are still perfect and I'm high functioning autistic. it's probably why I am so fond of Silkies and silky feathering that is so satisfying to run fingers through. Taught myself how to program and love me some circuitry and engineering. I do 3D printing too. Other forums, Thingiverse, and Github know me as puzzlecube in case anyone wants to check that out but I figured the chicken forum needs a chicken name. I am excited to be able to learn a completely new world of fascinating things as I go though life with my new furry feathered friends. I am now addicted to Silkies and this is just the beginning!
I will post some chick pics here if anyone wants me to but the Silkie section of the forum gets it first so I can get my color question answered for all my mystery chicks. Plus this post is long.
