(1)Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
-I got my first hen over a year ago, she has been living in the house. I started with coturnix quail for eggs and decided this spring to get some chicks. I have 8 chicks that are 2.5 weeks old and an incubator load set to hatch Monday.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 9
(3) What breeds do you have?
1 pure silkie, 2 silkie/Easter egger, 5 heritage crosses (they are a possible mix of ayam cemani, black copper maran, cochin, barred rock and wyandotte. 1 who looks like she will be barred rock, one looks cochin/wyandotte). I have polish, wyandotte, ayam cemani and cochin in incubator. My hen is Astralorp/cochin
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I enjoy birds all in all. They are like little feathered dinosaurs and I love their personalities. Plus, they are beautiful. Our hen has been hilarious to have around.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I garden, keep parrots, play with fermenting, reading, crafting
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have 1 daughter, 11. We have 2 rabbits, 4 cats, cockatiels, budgies, a lovebird, 2 rats and around 22 quail (I haven't counted in a while). 4 of our quail are "special needs".
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have been reading BYC for a couple years now as it pops up in almost every google search about chickens and many people refer to the forum. I finally joined because I have chicks now I figured it was time.
