I just joined. I'm not a chicken owner, however, one of my clients is and I'm his pet care person.
My client has 11 birds in his yard in SE Seattle. I have been to this forum many times over those years looking for solutions to the many issues that have popped up maintaining such a large flock on a tiny city lot. He has 6 hens, 3 ducks and 2 turkeys. He has made many improvements to his property in service of his birds. I hope to find more answers here to one persistent problem (mud) we haven't yet been able to solve as well as the news one that pop up from time to time (broody birds, coop maintenance, flies, etc., to make friends and save my sanity.
Here's a few picks of the flock. View attachment 1349745

What's that? Never heard of it but am very excited to hear about it. How does it protect grass?
Its a plastic mesh that comes in rolls. You can get it in most garden/diy stores (I’m in UK but I guess they do it where you are too?) You can peg it to the earth then a good 3” covering of wood chips over the top. I find woodchips on their own very quickly sink and combine with the mud but the protector roll helps prevent that :thumbsup

I know you'll enjoy it here!!

I never had any luck with trying to stop the mud.. It was a never ending battle for me living in Louisiana. The only I made it through wet winters here was using hay. I'd put super think layers down on the mud.
