I'm am new here, and figured I would do the introduction. I got my first chickens when I was 5 years old. My kindergarten class hatched eggs, and I wanted one so badly. I was not allowed to have any of the class project chicks so I talked my step-dad into taking me to the feed store. I had a few bucks and bought myself a buff orpington, and a barred rock for my little sister. It all grew from there, but that original buff orpington lived until the day before I started 10th grade... I have not had any chickens for the last 6 years or so. Then 10 weeks ago I was at a farm store with my husband and kids, my 3 year old and I were looking at the chicks and he kept asking to hold one. My husband said "you can hold one when mommy comes back to buy some while I'm at work, because we know she can't resist it much longer". Two days later we had a brooder set up, and came home with 4 buff orpingtons. They are now almost 11 weeks old, and it has been so much fun to share the experience with my son. He thinks he's a farmer now, and helps out so much with every chicken chore. It's great to see how responsible he has been with "his girls" as he calls them. We now have 4 silkie bantams (4 weeks old) in the brooder, 2 blue and 2 splash. I have never had a small breed of chicken, so I'm getting anxious about how it will go adding them to a small flock. I can't wait to move so we can have a buff orpington rooster, and hatch out own babies. My son already wants blue and green eggs, but we can't go crazy on the chicken math until we have a couple more acres to free range and able to have a rooster or two.
Thanks for reading all my rambling if you made it this far. I am happy to be here.
