Welcome. Here at BYC, there are a few things regarding chicken keeping whereas we have differing opinions. My advice is listen to all and make the best decision for yourself.

At the same time, there are three important items we agree upon, security, coop ventilation, and coop/run sizes. Do not buy a pre-manufactured coop. No one here will disagree. If you cannot build, convert a shed. You need a coop you can walk in to and has a lot of above the roost ventilation covered securely with 1/2 inch hardware cloth. As far as calculating space, double whatever recommendations you see (another thing we don't disagree with). You will need to cover everything that has an inch or greater opening in your coop and run with 1/2 hardware cloth for predator security.
