Hello, my name is Bekah and my boyfriend Jeff and I have fallen in love with raising chickens!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

Our first four chickens came from our neighbors when we were in college. They decided that they didn't want to keep them anymore so we took them in and absolutely loved having our own eggs and interacting with them. About 1.5 years ago we moved and decided to upgrade our flock.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?

We have about 35 chickens plus or minus a few due to predation and a couple of eggs that hatched (and okay, an impulse buy at TSC).

(3) What breeds do you have?

Most of our birds are RIRs, then we have some Leghorns, and for fun some Campines, Hamburgs, and Phoenix hens. We have 5 roosters that all get along pretty well, 2 are RIRs, the "coop king" is a Leghorn, and 2 Golden Penciled Hamburg roosters (I think one of these was an accident from the hatchery because I am short a hen of this breed and did not intend on having 2 roosters of this breed haha).

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?

It seemed like every time I googled something this was the site that came up. Soon I began coming straight here because of the educated answers and variety of viewpoints that would answer each post.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?

I actually went to college at The University of Findlay for Western Riding (horse training) classes. I had several summer jobs where I broke out 2 y/o colts. I also enjoy making jewelry, baking/cooking, and just general crafting.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.

Jeff and I own: a 2 yo Siberian Husky named Kushluk, a 1 yo Siberian (possibly mix) named Echo, a 1 yo Great Pyrenees named Russet, and 2, 3-ish year old male cats (brothers, the only two in a stray litter). I work for both a "general practice" veterinary facility and an "Animal Emergency and Critical Care" facility. Jeff works for CVS as a pharmacist and does almost all of our gardening, vehicle repair, and small construction (of the coop and the doghouse, the fence etc.) We have a large berry patch with 4 different strains of strawberries, and blackberries. We make our own jam from these berries, and our own pickles from the garden. Every once in a while i like to hard boil and then beet pickle some of the smaller "bite size" phoenix eggs.

I'm so glad to be a part of this forum now! I'll see you all in the threads :D

Hi Bekah, great intro, thanks for sharing your story! Since you like to bake, you might like to join us over on the Home Baker's thread (the link is in my signature line at the bottom of this post).

Thanks for joining us!

G’Day from down under Bekah :frow Welcome!

Thank you for a great intro! :clap

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week articles which I have found to be a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock or other critters, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
