Hi all! I have been lurking here for about a year but finally decided to join. I grew up on a cattle ranch and we had chickens when I was young. I had been thinking about getting chickens for several years but finally did it last year. I currently have 30 of them. I have Java, Bielefelder, Marans, Crevecoeur, Lyonnaise, Dampierre, Bresse, Isbar and Hedemora.
I live in a small town in Utah. We also have 4 dogs, a cat and three horses. I have to say my favorites are the chickens though. They are so entertaining. Sometimes I wish I could just sit and watch them all day! My little granddaughter who loves to help with the chicken care will get to sell some beautifully colored eggs at the farmers market this summer.
As far as hobbies, I enjoy riding horses, reading, sewing and spending time with family. My New Year resolution (and I don’t normally make them) was to eat healthier this year. Fresh eggs from my chickens are part of that. I always grow a garden and buy half a beef from my neighbor but now even more of my food is local and not only does it taste better but I know it’s better for me. I’d like to be even more self-sufficient but I’m not milking a cow twice a day lol.
