Hello fellow chicken lovers!
I’m fairly new to the world of backyard chickens, but so far I’m loving it!
I got my first set of baby chicks in early January. A rhode island red, Plymouth Rock and lavender Orpington. We moved them to their outside coop when they were about 6 weeks old and they loved forging in the backyard! Unfortunately, our four-year-old German Shepherd loved them a little too much and two of them had heart attacks when she was chasing them around. My family was devastated, but we recently decided to start again, with precautions in mind that is!
We picked up two 5 1/2 month old Rhode Island red hens and two baby chicks this past weekend. The baby chicks are a blue Plymouth rock and an Easter Egger, which I’m very excited about!
My favorite thing about owning backyard chickens is the sheer joy of watching them discover the yard while they peck around, roll in the dirt and talk to me and the hopes to have fresh eggs very soon!
Our family is a very adventurous family, we like to go off roading, camping, fishing and generally be outdoors, so being able to sit outside and watch our mini farm is just so much fun.
My husband and I have three daughters, 18, 15 and 6 years old as well as a five-year-old German Shepherd and many fish in two large fish tanks aside from our fairly new backyard chicken crew. We own our own construction company, and our goal is to one day move to where we will be able to have more than just backyard chickens, dogs and kids.
I found out about BYC when I was trying to discover tips and tricks for raising baby chicks and ensuring that we received hens instead of roosters and then I got hooked on all of the threads and awesome stories that everyone has to share!
i’m so excited to be here, thank you for taking the time to read my story!
