I have just joined this forum and I'm excited about learning and sharing from all of you. My name is Diane and I live in Upstate NY. I have 4 Rhode Island Red Hens and a beautiful Rooster named Libererce....I don't know his breed but he is only about 8 months old and just beginning to find his voice...LOL...Sort of like a young boy in puberty...

I want my ladies to go broody, as they are producing 4 eggs a day...Should I not collect the eggs and see what happens....It's the beginning of sping here, so I do not want to go through the heating lamps, etc...Any ideas?

from S. Florida! Its great to have you here with us! I'm not sure about your letting your girls go broody, as I have not had the opportunity to do so with mine.
But I'm sure someone will have answers for you. Enjoy your chickens!

Thanks for joining us.

From what I have read, you continue to collect the eggs (replace with Ceramic or wooden) until you know they are broody. Then you mark the ones you give back to the broody hen, so you can tell if new ones are being laid there, and you pull the unmarked ones daily so they hatch atthe same time.

I have not had a broody yet, but that is what I have read. My hens are doing great at laying, even in the winter; I have an incubator so that is how I have hatched thus far. Hoping for a broody later in the spring or summer. I have already made a broody area in the new coop.

Some hens go broody and some never do.
