Hello everyone, me and the hubby are new the chickens and wanted to join this forum to share stories and gain advice.
Today we went to a poultry farm and ended up with 4 gorgeous chicks. I'm afraid while we looked into chick care we were a little at a loss when it came to breeds so we picked a random lot. After getting on the internet once settling the chicks into their brooder I found that the breeds we had picked up were quite different.
Can you advise if this flock in your opinion is likely to get on? (all 1 week old)
1 Black Silkie
1 Buff Orpington
1 Shamo
1 White Crested Black Polish
The Shamo is a pretty little thing and very friendly at this stage but can be loud at times. I've since read they have been bred for fighting and so a little worried the silkie and buff might get picked on. The other three are fairly sweet and quiete but the buff orp did get a bad case of pasty butt which we have struggled sorting out. It looks a mess down there but we've plucked and picked most of it off.
They couldn't sex any of them so were not sure what we have at this stage. Ideally we need hens because they will be living in our backyard. What do people generally do if they find they have males in their backyard flock? We are very attached to them already so I do hope they are mostly hens!
