In the Brooder
Hello,
I've been using BYC for most of my chicken research.
Designing the coop, feed, and so on.
I've had two flocks so far.
One batch of old hens a farmer gave me.
Though their laying days were over, they seemed healthy.
One day a predator got to them, and killed them all.
BUT, they gave me good insight for the next flock.
In preparation for the next flock I:
Tightened up coop security.
(Bonus: A neighbor was trapping raccoons and I caught a couple in some aviary netting)
Removed a roost that wasn't needed.
Planned for winter.
Now I have 6 happy hens that I raised, they just started laying this fall.
They appear to be happy and healthy.
I haven't had chickens through the winter yet, but I have started winterizing the coop.
And once again, I'm looking through BYC for advice.
I live in Western New York, where the wind blows, and the lakes vomit snow...
