Hello! I am new here and wanted to take a quick minute to introduce myself. I am somewhat new to backyard chickening! Our first batch ladies we had for a year before a fox took out our entire flock in the middle of the afternoon just a few days ago. My 11 year old was devastated. She poured her heart and soul into her "ladies". We live in a more rural area, but we are technically "in town" so predators have never really been a huge issue because we have a privacy fence. Well we know now that we had a false sense of security. We had been hearing sighting of foxes around town, but thought because of our dog and fence, our girls were safe. We are still traumatized from what we found in our yard. If we wouldn't have caught the fox coming back to retrieve the ladies he left behind, I would have guessed it was a different predator. Yesterday we purchased 10 more chicks and 2 ducks (just for fun! They better not be drakes or the fun will be short lived!). We got a mixture of Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Australorps, Isa Browns, White Leghorns, and Golden Laced Wyandottes. We currently have them in a brooder set up in our living room so they are safe and they can get acclimated to us. Our previous flock was super friendly and ran to us every time we went outside. They would even jump up onto the trampoline when our daughter was out there just to be with her. I hope these ladies develop the same temperament. We are making a predator proof run for these ladies and will admittedly go overboard, but I don't ever want to see what I saw a few days ago again! I am here for ideas for enrichment as well as to continue learning new and better ways to care for our beloved chickens!
