I have been visiting and using the information on BYC for about 6 months now. I figured I would introduce myself. My name is Tony and I live in beautiful Apex NC country. I have a few chickens about 20 RIR and 20 BPR and a few others. Chickens are my hobby and I plan to get more later this year. I live on an old tobacco farm and the tobacco barns have been converted into nice chicken coops. I figure I can house about 100 more, but I will wisper that because my wife may hear. lol! Hello everyone!

Nice ! Don't worry ...I won't tell ! She'll be addicted too soon enough ! It's so great you have old barns to turn into coops...I'm so jealous ! How many acres do you have ?

Thanks! But I think she is on to me!

There is 28 acres behind my house and 3 barns. There is also a wildlife preserve behind me, so I have a challenge of securing my chickens. Last year I had a few run ins with snakes and something I am not sure of, but it sounded like a bobcat. Knock on wood I have not had anymore problem in about 6 months, but I will not let my guard down.

Well...you could buy her a silkie or some other breed to warm her up ! It's nice to have a good chunk of land , only problem is the predators when you live in the country . I wouldn't worry too much over the bobcats....but maybe dig a trench in front of the doorways and put some nice big rocks in there . It also helps if you have dogs that sleep outside , they'll let ya know when somethings happening , unless your a ;)heavy sleeper !

I knew I was collecting rocks for a reason! For real today I went for a walk and brought back two good size rocks with me for no reason. I just found them and wanted to keep them. LOL!
Yea my wife tries to act like she does not care but when she found out that I would not process the BPR hens she started spending time with them. (Do you think they are cold? Is that enough food for them? Do they have water?) She is asking and I am suppose to think she does not care.
I have a 110 pound Black Lab-German Sheppard mix and he will not sleep unless he is right beside the bed. So I ruled that one out a long time ago. I keep saying I am going to get an outside dog, but it is so hard to find one that will get along with my Brownie.

Welcome aboard, lots of great people on here and lots of information.I have a younger brother that just moved back home to upstate NY from Hickory,NC.I told him he was crazy.

Thank you! My wife is from upstate NY and I am from Georgia. I spent a year in NY with her and I loved it. It is a beautiful place! I would love to go back but it is hard to make a living there. With this cold front we had this past week my wife said she was never this cold before and she moved here to get away from it. LOL! Hickory is about half way from where I live to my favorite spot at the mountains. All is beautiful country!
