Hello,
My name is Larissa and I am a 1st time chicken owner. I got 6 adult laying hens from a couple I know and then got 7 baby chicks as a gift from a friend. Sadly we lost 4 of them and recently we had to give away one because he was a rooster and started to crow. (we are not allowed to keep roosters in the city) So now we are down to 2 little chicks but I think another one is also a rooster so we might have to give him away too. :( (I started a thread in the "what breed/sex is this" to find out which one is a rooster and which one is a hen)
I've always wanted to keep chickens but only now got the chance. We set up their coop in our backyard and they have some room to roam. So far they're happy and laying great. With 6 adult chickens we usually get 5-6 eggs a day. There is sooooo much to learn about keeping chickens and you guys answered so many questions for me, so thank you!
My husband will be building them a new chicken coop before winter so if anyone has a nice coop plan they would like to share I would really appreciate it. It doesn't have to be really big, maybe big enough for 10-15 chickens since that's how many we plan to have once we buy some property outside the city.

Nice to meet you all!

Howdy from Kentucky! Check out the Coops pages here on BYC for plenty of ideas and plans to build your coop.

Nice to meet you! I am a first time chicken mom, too. I think two of my "girls" ended up being boys, but I am not sure how to tell. I can't have roosters in town, either. I'm sad to see them go, since I have had them for 4 months and got them as 1-day old baby chicks.

I understand the heartache.

Geez, that would upset me. There are no restrictions where I live, I've got 5 acres in the country. We're in the process of building a coop. I plan on getting 5 girls in the spring, don't know if I will get chicks or older pullets. I really just want hens but want to raise them myself. I'd hate to get attached to them and then find out they were roos.

Welcome to the site! I have 6 15wk old chicks, I really like the flock size. We built our coop large (48sq ft) so technically I have room for more but I'm not sure if I will.

I seriously never want to know how much time I spent "goofing off" in the coop section of this site lol We ended up just getting a carpenter friend to built a shed like building off the side of our garage. It's perfect!
