Greetings from Colorado. About 30 years ago we raised a couple of chickens and had a good time (until the rooster began trying to attack my children). So, after a few years we were able to return them to their original owner. I sure wish we had the internet back then, like it is now, where we had so many experts with sound advice.

Now, since the COVID-19 and after not being able to purchase our beloved eggs for several weeks, my wife and I decided to start raising our own chickens once again. We have a large parcel of land in black bear and mountain lion country, so I’m currently planning a Fort Knox level coop and run. This is going to be quite the challenge as most of my neighbors animals have been killed or maimed by our local aggressive critters.

Very happy to be here and I’m sure I’ll be asking questions along the way!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I have a momma black bear that lives on the acreage behind my house. Her footprint was right next to my wood shed that is attached to the back of my garage. My coop is a large converted shed with a predator proof attached run, all enclosed with 1/2" hardware cloth that sits inside a 1/3 acre pen surrounded by a 42" high poultry net powered by a 10,000 volt charger. I've never had a problem with momma bear or any other land predator.
Even the neighbor's dog, who killed one of my chickens that flew out of the pen, got his just deserts when he peed on the fence and received a much deserved jolt to his man parts.

Welcome to BYC! We have the black bears but not the mountain lions. Thankfully none have ever tried getting into our coops. Probably because they are right off my home and Once the black bears tore down our welded wire fencing we replaced it with no climb horse fence and barb wire. With having 2 large predators I'd def go with DobieLover advise.

Hello, and welcome to BYC! We're so glad you joined us! :frow
So far I haven't had any bears too close to me, but I can attest to the hot wire working to keep out the mountain lions! :thumbsup
Good luck with your coop build! :)
