Hello, my name is Rachel and my family and I live on an acreage just south of Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes we are new to chickens, although my husband had them back in the UK when he was a kid. We just got our first chickens about a month ago.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We have 16 Chantecler chicks of mixed colours. We will keep all of the girls and one rooster and the rest are going to be slaughtered for meat.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Chanteclers because apparently they were bred for Canadian winters and are considered a Canadian Heritage Breed.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
My fabulous friend Google.

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
We have fainting goats, and 2 horses which I enjoy riding. I love gardening and photography and reading. We ski a lot in the winter and I also enjoy camping and travelling.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
We just moved home from an overseas assignment in the Middle East last year and this is our first year of acreage living and we love it. We made it through our first winter and have quite the petting zoo going with 7 goats, 1 horse, 1 pony, 3 dogs, 1 psychotic mouse killing cat, 1 hamster, 16 chickens, and about 52 fish in the pond ;) I'm an RN in the ER by night, and a petting zoo farmer by day!!! Up next summer....bees.

I've learned so much on here already from being a non-member. Looking forward to being able to interact now that I'm a member :)

Welcome to the flock. We have a great lady from Canada who has her own thread "Jest Another Day in Pear-A-Dice" - she knows all about surviving the winters etc.
posts are witty, informative and she has a great following. I think you would like it.

The reason I mentioned her, is you said you have Chanteclers, and so does she. She often speaks of how well they weather the temp extremes and heavy snow of her area. She knows a lot about genetics and also has geese, swans, ducks, chickens. She is such a fascinating person - her style of farming seems to work incredibly well for her.

Welcome to BYC, Rachel. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a very good and thorough introduction.) Chanteclers are an excellent breed. They are very cold hardy and good layers of large, brown eggs. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Chanteclers.
