I found this goldmine site while looking for information on raising chickens. My husband and I have almost six acres about an hour north of Nashville. We are also raising bees. Hoping to start the chickens in the spring after the cold weather is past. My daughter does food manufacturing and will be moving her kitchen out to our property. Hopefully, we will have success with a couple of chickens and then graduate to accommodate her cooking/baking needs. This is also one more adventure into becoming self sufficient,

The best place to start your chicken education is with the articles in the Learning Center. There are topics there that will help get you off on the right foot.

When you're ready to get your birds, I'd suggest you start with at least 3-4. Chickens are flock animals and if something unexpected happens to one of two, you wouldn't want to be left with a lonely only bird.

Good luck with all your plans, thanks for joining us!

Greetings from Kansas, 5Cs, and welcome to BYC! As NFC said, the Learning Center will be an invaluable resource for you! Best of luck to you, your self sufficiency quest, and your spring chickens!!

Welcome!

As N F C has suggested, the Learning Centre is a great starting point.

You might want to say hello on your local thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you ‘Find your State’s thread.

And some great coop ideas here if you do not already have any: https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/2/Coops

I agree with starting with 3 or more. I started with 2 and sadly lost one; there was a mad panic to find her a companion and we had to waive the quarantine period etc.

Good luck with your venture and I hope you enjoy BYC. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends
