I am excited about BYC. Below I pasted the sample questionnaire that the site moderator provided:
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
We started keeping chickens 7 years ago. A friend was going to make an order and we went half in. I had watched a PBS special about how a Vineyard was using chickens to weed, keep down insect populations, and fertilize their soil via a portable coop. Then that same friend let me borrow Joel Salatin's "Poultry Profits". I was hooked at the concept of "using" chickens to help with more than just laying eggs.
We, my wife and I, have 3 kids who are involved with chickens in 4H. I am the poultry leader and we are having a blast.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Down to three (from 12). We had a run of coons and a very hungry yellow lab that decimated our flock. One of the three was given to me by a friend during fair this year... she is a hen that is great at pest control in our garden and has the best personality. The other two are my daughters chickens.
(3) What breeds do you have?
The new addition is a White Standard Brahma hen and my daughters are Buff Bantam Brahma's (rooster and a hen).
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Via a google search regarding Wyandottes. I have just joined the SPPA and am looking at choosing the Partridge Wyandotte as the breed I want to dedicate my time to. Entering a new phase in chicken care and management.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Time with family, 4H leader, photography, fly fishing, hunting, gardening, and looking at getting goats
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
Well, we are a family of 5. My wife and I, two girls ages 17 and 14, and my son age 10. We are Christian and have been in the Billings area for 8 years and loving it. We have a house that sits on 1.75 acres and have been trying to learn to use the property to benefit not only ourselves but others. We are very active in 4H (past 7 years). My wife is the rabbit leader (we have 10 rabbits) and I am the poultry leader. The kids in our club have done well showing their animals... demonstrated by being awarded many Grand Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons in all age groups (Beginner, Junior, and Senior). We could not be more proud of them all.
The person responsible for feeding my passion for poultry and the benefits of keeping them is Joel Salatin. My wish is to educate people about the benefits of keeping poultry and show them the many, many, roles that poultry play. I cannot picture a world without them! Not to mention the gift of fresh eggs cooking in the pan most mornings.
Thank you BYC for this site. I am excited to see that something like this exists. Hopefully I can positively contribute to this forum.
