Hello from Boise Idaho

Welcome! That is too funny about your rooster. Haha. I just got one recently that I didn't think was crowing yet...well, he and his girls came from FL and we are currently building their coop, so they are in the garage which is under the house. Every morning he crows his little head off down there!

Hey Amy! No, I havent done anything "chicken" in 5 yrs until now. I am originally FROM here but my husband works natural gas pipeline and we moved around alot. It has been 5 yrs ago that I had chickens...until now! We bought this place in Meridian so that I could be close to my elderly parents. The coop, pen and barn were already here...I have two horses, too. Anyway I got 5 chickens from one guy and then 11 from a lady in Middleton...it's been about 3 weeks and theyve all finally decided to get along. Poor Little Henry the tiny little banty rooster was getting the crap beat out of him there for awhile...the "ladies" are all at least twice his size! I was having to doctor his neck with pick no more where they took a few feathers out. Unfortunately I have seen what can happen when chickens pick on one who has a little owie on them so I apply the bitter nasty tasting stuff BEFORE it reaches that point! Now they all are just in LOVE with Little Henry! He's quite the little pint size Romeo! It's pretty amusing the size difference!
Thank-You to all for the warm welcome! I will put up some pics when I get a chance!

North End Organic Nursery is probably a bit far from you in Meridian, but if you find yourself in Boise's north end then I would recommend it.

When my chickens were sick recently I took them to Dr. Shackelford in Meridian (Treasure Valley Vet) and he and his staff were great! So I recommend them too. We were in the treatment room when I heard the receptionist say, "We can't allow the eagle back in the treatment area right now because he would scare the chicken." I looked out into the reception area and there was a lady holding a golden eagle! She volunteers for wild bird rescue and the doctor gives medical treatment for wild life. I thought it was very nice of them to be considerate of my chicken's feelings.

The Boise Tour de Coop was lots of fun. It was like a garden tour except that we toured back yard chicken coops, and then there was an after party at the North End Organic Nursery (which is how I found out that they sell organic chicken feed) with live chickens and a live band. Here's a photo of the after party.
