We are "newbies" having just gotten our first chicks on April 13. It's like being a parent all over again, running down in the middle of the night to make sure everyone is OK and taking pictures every day to document all the changes. We set up our brooder in an old pack 'n play. Saw this idea on BYC and thought, why not. DH lined the sides and bottom with plywood to keep out drafts and keep them from getting tangled in the netting. So far (3 days later) it seems to be working just fine. They tend to be a bit skittish when you first start talking to them, or moving things around in the brooder. I had just been putting my hand down inside so they could investigate and get used to me. Today though, I put a scoop of crumbles in my hand and then put my hand down inside and pretty soon I had everyone eating out of my hand.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Congrats on your new chicks they look lovely :celebrate Food is always the way to a chicks heart and the need for them to investigate everything makes it ideal for taming. This is a how I tame mine too and as you say they are soon eating out of your hand.

Good luck with your chicks I'm sure they will bring lots of fun and entertainment. Be sure to ask any questions everyone here to help.
Enjoy BYC and all the chicken chat :frow

good morning, I was just reading your journal on raising chicks naturally and wonder about grit at this age. My chicks are 3 days old. If I give them anything other than crumbles should I be giving them grit. I'd like to add some variety and they're beginning to look a little bored pecking at pine shavings. (that could just be me!!) Any way, if I were to give them grass/roots, yogurt or things like you have on your list, do I need to give them grit too.

Hi and welcome to BYC!

So glad you could join our community! Congratulations on your new babies. Bringing home new chicks can be so exciting (and addicting!). Sounds like you put together a lovely brooder for them! If you want to feed them things other than chick crumbles, give them grit. I wouldn't suggest giving them treats for another week or so, however. Wait until they are around 2 weeks old.

They'll tame down in time.

When they reach a couple months old, they'll be much tamer.

Welcome to our flock and I hope you enjoy BYC as much as we do! Good luck with your chicks.
