I'm a potential newbie to raising a small flock of backyard chickens. Right now I've subscribed to this wonderful website and am gathering and reading as much as I can before jumping in with both feet.

I live on an acre in a development that is zoned forest and farmland so I'm researching chickens that are quiet and calm. Don't want to upset neighbors with morning rooster calls. Looking to own about six total (3 different breeds). Suggestions on breeds are welcome.

I am married with two boys. I'm a hobby beekeeper (2 hives), gardener, birdwatcher, and pet owner (3 indoor cats and lots of tropical fish). I home educate my two boys (secular) and hope the chickens can be a "pathway" to some sort of discovery.

I look forward to reading future posts.

Hello and welcome to BYC

There are so many breeds to choose from and no two are the same! Some are flighty, some are adorable, some are egg factories and some even lay pretty coloured eggs. Why don't you have a look through the Breeds section here and this handy little chicken chart:

http://www.ithaca.edu/staff/jhenderson/chooks/chooks.html to give you some ideas?

I may even have some free chickens for you.
