We raised three chickens this summer - two BO's and an RIR - on our 1/3-acre property. It was a great experience for our boys and a learning experience for all of us, but it ended tragically for the birds. The BO's both grew into aggressive cockerels and we ended up eating them. That left the RIR pullet lonely, so we asked a friend to overwinter her with his small flock; she never integrated into that flock, and she ended up dying after a sudden cold snap. The last time I asked the boys, they still wanted to try again next summer, so here's hoping for a better outcome.
