Hi, everyone! My name is Jess, and during the day, I work as a bank CSR. When I'm home, I'm a wannabe homesteader. I say wannabe because although I WANT to do things, it seems like time and money run out. I live with my fiance and my future mother-in-law, and I plan to stay here for a long time. She wants her future grandchildren to be right under her feet, and we have the room! We already have three dogs. Jackson is our black lab mixed with some sort of hound. He's a spaz. Luke (or Lucas) is our yellow lab mix. He's very chill...except with the chicks! They were both rescued. Molly is our own pure lab, and she's a chocolate.

For the past year or so, MIL and I have been talking about getting chickens. It's something we've both always wanted to do. So we set about doing the research...and then life got in the way. This year, we're going for it. Last night, we went to Tractor Supply nearby and got ourselves chickens and ducks. Mom just had to have the ducks. And they are REALLY cute! We got four ducks, and fifteen chickens. It was going to just be ten chicks, but the man at the store told us that five of the chickens that were getting their feathers in had been there for a few weeks, and he'd have to give them to a commercial farm if they didn't sell. We initially didn't want that many chickens, but how could we refuse? We took them home too.

I did have chickens when I was a kid, but I was certainly too young to appreciate the fact. We only got about three eggs a week out of that flock of six, so I suspect that they were either poor layers or they were older birds.

So, the chicks that we have now are...I have no idea.

I know that, of the ten little fuzzy chicks, we have two Australorps. I suspect that we have at least four Rhode Island Reds. I think we've got some New Hampshire chicks. And some White Legbar chicks (if those are the ones that have the chipmunk stripes...could be wrong!).

Then we've got these older chicks that we're not sure about at all. Here's a picture of them hanging out with their ducky brethren.

Anyhow, I ended up on BYC because I've been using this site a LOT for the research I've done over the past year.
