Hi all! I just figured I'd finallyy register and make a post here and say thanks....thanks for such a great forum! I've been lurking daily for several months and even now, I can hardly find a reason to make a post because the search function on this forum is the best search tool anywhere on the internet! Oh my goodness, any question I have, I search it and BAM there is my answer!

I spend a couple months scouring all the coop builds trying to get ideas for a coop and eventually I sort of did my own thing but I still used some of the things I'd seen here and incorporated it and I wouldn't have been able to do it without this site. I will put together all the info from my coop project and post it up to share with others. I took photos all the way along and hopefully I'll be able to help someone else out with some ideas.

I've been married for over 13 years and my wife and I have a 2.5 year old daughter. We live in Deep East Texas, in a tiny town of 447 people. We live a few miles from Nacogdoches which is the oldest town in Texas and has a population of about 30,000, including alot of college students at Stephen F. Austin State Univ. One of my best friends is a poultry science professor at the college and he manages the college's working commercial pullet farm as well as maintaining laying hens for his classes. He has a ton of real world experience so he's been invaluable to me through out this all.

We started this project because we live out in the country, we are slap dab in the middle of commercial chicken growing country, our little girls loves farm animals and we felt this would be a great way for her to have fun and learn where her food comes from. Oh and fresh eggs is always a bonus.

We started off with 6 chickens but I have room for up to 12. We will be adding a few more fairly soon. All of our hens are about 18 months old. We have 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 2 Rhode Island Reds and 2 New Hampshires. Hands down we like the Barred Rocks the best. They are hands down, smarter than the other 4 and they have a much better temperament. When we add more hens, we will def. be getting more Barred Rocks.

So again, thanks for such a great forum and I figured I'd finally stick my head in and say hi and thanks to everyone for teaching us so much!

That's country talking there...lol!! Barred rocks ARE great birds, aren't they!?! Inquisitive as all get-out for sure, and personality out the wazoo. For a bit of variety, you might try white rocks or partridge rocks as well (the part. are beautiful). Oh, and welcome to the forum!
