Hello to everyone. I'm am a retired Philly firefighter now living down In Dover DE. I have always wanted chickens and when my neighbor behind me got a flock I just fell in love with them. He has 9 Rhode Island reds and their just lovely creatures. Anyway I have my chicks (13) now and they are between 4 and 7 weeks old, I bought eight different varieties as I wanted a mixed flock. All are doing well so far and their getting their feathers. I did have to remove my two Polish hens and one Barred rock from the group as they were getting picked on badly, the Barred rock had a bad leg and wss not able to stand but is better now. Hopefully I will be able to reintroduce them back in when their sizes match a bit better as these 3 were the last one purchased. The coup will be done soon and then their run, I should bread to give them some outside time later this week.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Polish and Silkies tend to be bullied in mixed flocks. Their 'exotic' appearance attracts a lot of negative attention. They frequently have their crest and beards plucked badly- as well as other injuries and/or being kept away from feed and water.

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! I keep mainly polish barring one Amber link hen. I have two flocks of them and I have to have the Amber in with the more dominant group of polish as she picks on the less dominant group. Polish really don't do well in mixed flocks and I would prepare yourself for the fact you may not be able to reintroduce them back into your flock. The fancy crests and the fact they don't see well because of the crest makes them an easy target for bullying. When you do reintroduce them add some extra feed and water stations so the other birds can't bully them out of eating and drinking. More dominant birds will try to starve them out of the flock.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

Glad you got the chickens you've been wanting. They are fun, interesting little creatures to have around. Nothing better than watching chicken tv!

Nice to have you join us!
