I've inherited a bit of a mess when we bought some acreage 2.5 months ago that came with some chickens. The coop hadn't been cleaned in 2 years and they were all underfed. It's taking a lot of TLC but the hens are improving :) We also sent the rooster to another home where debonair style could be appreciated with the ladies. I never thought that I'd like my little ladies so much.

My girls are 4 Brahma, 2 Rhode Island Reds, 1 Silkie and 4 White Leghorn chicks.
We're also raising 7 Guinea keets at the moment.

Welcome to BYC! So glad you could join!

Sounds like a nice flock. I'm glad you are taking such wonderful care of them.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Glad to hear your chickens are improving. Which part of east Texas are you in? My wife and I were both raised in east Texas. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC!

You got your feet wet real fast with an instant flock and messy coop! Those girls are lucky to have you care for them.

There's a state thread for TX you might enjoy, drop in and say hi:

Thanks for joining us!

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Thank you for giving the girls the TLC they needed to turn around. You may want to check out the coops section to see if the one on the property is up to par. It would be good to visit the predator section to know any security issues that need to be beefed up.

We're in Rosharon, just south of Houston. We found 15 acres. My husband fell in love with the land, so here we are ;)
Where did y'all hail from?

Thanks. I'll go check that out. I *think* the coop is a good one, just nasty. Still working on digging out 2 years of poopie dirt. A new layer would always be added onto the old. I would love to improve it all and I'm always up for new ideas :) It's taking me a little longer to get it all where it needs to be because I have 3 kids 7yrs and under too.

We're from further north than you; Blue Ridge for my wife and Greenville for me. My sister and brother-in-law both lived in the Houston area for a while so we've been there on several occasions.
