Hi everyone -

I am new to all of this and SO excited!! I have 3 hens and one went broody so I bought some fertilised eggs from the market. Legbars I think and also a patridge pekin. I got 4 chicks on Tuesday. 3 legbars which I think I have sexed - but also a little black chick which I presume is the pekin. How do I sex it and will it stay black as I thought it was meant to be gold?!

Any help would be gratefully received!

Thank you!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

If it is a cochin (pekin), they are slow-feathering and difficult to feather sex. You will likely have to wait until it is quite a bit older. Legbars are autosexing, so easier to tell at hatch time.

Thank you both for replying - that's super. I was a bit worried the pekin was a penguin!!! It's so gorgeous. I'll look out for the feather change.
