Not a chicken mom yet, but I am in the exploring and researching phase right now. I've wanted chickens for a while and my husband has been against it because of the set up costs (his favorite line is "you can buy a lot of store-bought eggs for the cost of a chicken coop"). I have horses and I'm constantly fighting spiders and cobwebs in the barn. I finally convinced him that chickens would help with spiders and flies, so he's actually considering it.

We're looking at building a coop mostly using free items like pallets. I would like to allow the chickens to free range around our little acreage, but worry about hawks.

I have two maltese pups - 15 and 13 years old. One is about 5 pounds and the other is 10 pounds, so I'm always aware of large birds in the area. In all of these years, there hasn't been an incident, but one never knows.

I also have three horses that are used mainly for trail riding. I live in the Plant City area and I'm always looking for riding buddies, so let me know if you like to trail ride, too.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

While it's definitely cheaper to purchase your eggs, keeping chickens is priceless, they will enrich your life. And they will do a good job at eating the creepy crawlies in your barn, it will keep them entertained for hours!

Welcome to our community!
