Hi there, I got 4 chickens and luckily only one was a rooster. I am having a blast. I like eggs now after hating them for about 15 years but once you taste a real egg, it really makes a difference. I have a 9 year old little girl and we love animals so I thought above and beyond cats and dogs, the next step for us would be chickens. It's a responsibility with a reward. What other animal poops breakfast out every day? Well, according to one of my dogs, cats poop breakfast but gross.....That's why there is a baby gate blocking the litter box!

We have not been taking any money for our eggs but my friends are insisting I take their money so I guess it's time to get a spreadsheet together and match my expenses to my income. Not interested in turning a profit at this time. Just having a boatload of fun! I have one chicken who lays eggs that are a little wrinkly. It looks like the egg isn't drying fast enough and her weight is squishing it. I put oyster shell in there for them to eat but I'm still getting wrinkly eggs. We had a double yolk on the winter equinox and a double yolk on Valentine's Day.

Greetings and welcome to BYC Lora! So glad you joined us. Sounds like you're having a blast with your birds! They are great to have! There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Eggs are hard when they are laid by the hen. They do not harden up--that is an old wives tale. I know this because I have had a couple of hens lay an egg on my hand! I was collecting them and trying to move her out of the way...Ploop! It was very cool!

There is likely something our of line in the egg shell gland. It is not a bad thing but happens.

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

Welcome to BYC! Great to have you here!

Like your friends, our friends want to pay us for the eggs we give them (although that't not what we're in it for). So here's what we do: the egg income all goes to our eight-year-old daughter. It's her little business. My wife and I still buy the food, but our daughter helps with the feeding and collecting the eggs. She "sells" the eggs for $4/dozen, and then I work with her on her budgeting (saving, spending, giving). It's kind of like an allowance (in that we're subsidizing it by buying the food), but it feels more like it's her money. We've found it a really good way to begin teaching her to handle money.
