I am just starting my chicken adventure! I have 6 4 week old Buff Orpingtons, 3 3 week old Welsumers, and 3 Isa Browns. They have been great so far and friendly gals! Just today I noticed one of my OPs is getting pecked around where her tail feathers will be. I'm not sure how to get the others to quit pecking her. They are out growing their home but the weather has been to frigid to move out yet. Any advice would be great!

Crowding in the brooder or coop will cause cannibalism. So you need to give them more room somehow. It can help to lower the temp 5 degrees right now, a head of schedule as this will chill their mental states down. Also, give them something to do in the brooder. Put some branches to climb on, 2x4 in there to roost on, (2 side up), a box full of grass hay or dead leaves, you can put sand in this box, sprinkle some scratch in there for something to scratch thru. If you do add seeds, make sure you do have sand for grit. Just get creative and give them things to do other than pick on each other. In the mean time, spray the area that is being picked on with blu-kote. This will not only prevent infection, but should help stop the others from bothering this raw spot. If you can somehow offer more room, this would be great. But do these other things in the mean time and it should help the situation.

Good luck with you new babies and welcome to BYC!

Thank you so very much for the tips!!! I'm gonna find a way to expand the brooder somehow. Hopefully the weather will warm too!!

Just wanted to say Hi -- from northern Indiana!
I'm not online much but this is a great place to be when you are looking for info.

Hopefully this cold thing called Winter will start changing over to the real Spring and we can let the babies out!

Have fun!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! TwoCrows gave you some good advice to help reduce pecking, if you are using a white light bulb, switching to red light may help, and/or darkening the room they are in a little will sometimes calm them down.

Thank you everyone!! I'm currently using a Brinsea ecoglow 20 and they seem to love it. I put my injuries gal by herself and got some blu-kote. Hopefully this will help! I also have arraignments for a bigger brooder, yay!
