Hello BYC members!

I'm not new to chickens (or other poultry types), but I am new to BYC. My first exposure to poultry came in high school when I partnered with my dad in a custom turkey operation. We raised a small flock of broad breasted white and bronze turkeys each year for the Thanksgiving/Christmas market based on orders/deposits made for custom-raised birds from established customers. Over the years I kept a small flock of 5-6 red/gold sex link hens for home consumption of eggs. I became involved in 4-H when my oldest son turned 9 and enrolled as a volunteer leader in the poultry, rabbit, and swine projects. Both I and my children showed poultry (chickens, ducks, & geese) for a number of years until we moved to an area which was not "chicken-friendly".

In 2011 I started up with chickens again and currently have a small laying flock of Gold Sex Link, Australorp, Welsummer, and Easter Eggers. Last week my latest shipment of chicks came in (18), which consist of Gold Sex Link, Delaware, Buff Orpington, Australorp, Welsummer, Easter Egger, and Silver Laced Wyandotte. Currently I have a total of 27 birds.

I found BYC while surfing the web and decided this was a great place for me to get caught up on the latest in the chicken world.

I raised rabbits for 44 years, but finally quit due to some health issues. I am still connected to my "rabbit friends" (many who also keep birds), through my web design/maintenance business. I own my own company - Rio Paso Web Design, which keeps me pretty busy, but I find my chickens are a great stress reliever. It's very calming just to sit and watch their comical antics. In my rare free time I like to oil paint and chickens just happen to be a great art subject!

Anyway, I am looking forward to checking out the BYC website/forum and meeting new friends.

would love to see examples of your chicken art. When you have enough posts on here - you will be allowed to offer them for sale on Buy/sell/trade forum - "everything else for sale" thread

Not sure how long it will take me to post enough to get there, but that is a thought. I have attached a photo of a wood relief piece I did a while back. After carving the relief, I painted in the rooster, added some dried wild flowers, some chicken wire, then framed him in with distressed wood. He's the focal point of my kitchen.
