(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, I’m brand new to chickens! I got my first flock last summer (2024) from Tractor Supply Co.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I currently have 16 chickens: 3 roosters and 13 hens. I also recently hatched 4 chicks that are now 3 weeks old.
(3) What breeds do you have?
Here’s the breakdown of my flock:
• Roosters: 1 Ayam Cemani (AC) and 2 others (not sure on their breeds yet).
• Hens: 2 Cinnamon Queens, 4 Easter Eggers (EE), 1 Bantam Cochin, 1 Rhode Island Red (RIR), 2 Light Brahmas, and 3 mystery breeds.
I got the Ayam Cemani separately from the rest.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love how every chicken has its own personality! My 4-year-old granddaughter loves spending time with them, and two of my hens even enjoy being picked up by her—it’s so heartwarming to watch. I also enjoy their quirky antics, collecting eggs, and just learning more about their care.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies! This year, I’m focusing on growing crops that I can feed to my chickens and ducks. It’s so rewarding to see them enjoy the fruits (or veggies!) of my labor.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you’d like to share.
I have 4 grandchildren, and my 4-year-old granddaughter is especially attached to the chickens. She helps me care for them and loves interacting with them. Besides my flock of chickens, I also have 12 ducks of various breeds and two Great Danes who keep life interesting!
I’m a nurse, but I’ve been out of work for the past year due to a work-related injury. During this time, I started raising chickens as a way to stay busy and have something to take care of. It’s been an amazing journey so far!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I discovered BYC while Googling questions about my chickens. I’ve known about this site for about 6 months and finally decided to join so I can connect with others and ask my own questions as I navigate this new adventure.
