Hey everyone, love the info here. I got my first chickens around easter....as an impulse...... a the the local feed store.....totally unprepared.... ( have I made enough mistakes yet?) That said, I have 6 VERY spoiled rotten chicken. I kept them in an old bird cage with a 100 watt light bulb near by. I guess the only thing I did right. at first, was to buy the baby chicken feed. I bought three and within a week bought three more. My babies would cry at night to come in...it was so sweet.
I built my first chicken tractor...its 4'x8" and 3' high. I don't have the coop part built yet, they sleep at night on the roost. Until they learned to get on the roost I would bring them in every night. I sit in the tractor with them and they climb all over me, one loves to sleep in the crook of my arm. I move the tractor every day or two and they love the new grass to pick at. I have a medium sized veri-kennel with grass clipping and a towel for them to hide in. I don't know how I lived all these years with out chickens. I named the first three.....noodles, nugget and dumpling.....(not really, but it sounds cute).
I rescued 3 buff orpingtons yesterday......they are supposed to be 2 months old but they are so tiny. They were feed nothing but oatmeal. On my way home I stopped and bought the some microwave mac & cheese, cooked it and gave it to them, without the cheese of course. They grabbed it and ate it like they had never been fed before. The big chickens were picking on them so I put a divider in the tractor to separate them. I hope when they get bigger I can have on big happy chicken family.
I will post pics as soon as possible.
My animal family is......6 amberlink ckickens, 3 buff orpington chickens 2 newfoundland dogs, 2 standard poodles, and 1 great natured cat, who isn't sure if she is predator or prey.
