We're from southern Kentucky and live on a small homestead. Been looking around the site now for the past severial weeks and have decided to raise barnyard chickens. We have a fairly large barn which is housing our chicken coops, etc. Been working night and day on coops, runways, etc. I'm not new to chickens as my grandparents always had them and I'd spend many a summers with them and play with the flock! Helping feed and gather eggs! My dad and aunt also raised them together. I've never had any myself up to now. We're starting off with a total of 18 chicks. We have six red sex-links, six buff orpingtons, and six Rhode island reds. We might even be adding some Silver laced Wyandottes. Does this sound like a good choice for beginners? From all I've been reading about these birds we'll have more eggs then we can eat!! Well, sorry for the long drawn out speech but thanks for reading and we look forward to meeting all you other chicken enthusiasts and hope to learn from you all so we maybe wont run into many mistakes along the way!

Many thanks for such a great site,

Steve & Valerie

Hello and welcome to BYC from Ohio!

Those are wonderful breeds and I know you'll enjoy them! I'm so envious that you've got a big barn to raise your chickens in! haha I have a mere hen house!

Take care and glad you joined,
Sharon

I think those are great to start off with!! We always have WAY more than enough eggs to eat around here so it's neat that we can get rid of the extras by selling them to the people my husband works with :)
