hi, been reading all the info you guys put out for a while know .. thought I should make an account .. we have 8 hens that are doing great out here in the heat .. they do some funny and odd stuff .. you guys have helped me out a lot .. i could not find info on one thing ...

has anyone every had a hen lay eggs in a hole (turtle den) underground ?
my oldest hen is making her nest in a turtle den underground it is soo odd but smart at the same time .. its a nice cool place for her ...

Welcome to BYC. Any place that seems safe and secure is regarded as a prospective nest site. She's just beatin ' the heat.

thanks guys =] yeah I agree with you .. she is a smart hen, an laying under there is way cooler than the coop...
our next step is getting the young hens to lay in the coop, they are 6 months old now .. we have found eggs in some odd places .. so excited that they are starting .. cant wait for them to lay more

I'm fairly new here too. Its been hot here in WA and my girls are panting by the time I get home from work, can't imagine living in LV. They haven't started laying eggs yet but they do seem to dig a really deep hole in the run. After reading your posts and the replies, I assume its not just to take a dirt bath but to try to stay cool.

we got a lot of heat .. it was up to 119 at the start of July ... we put ice bottle out in the yard for them to cool off by .. had the misters going, we would just make everything wet and cool for them .. at one point we brought the hens inside .. it has cooled down a lot thank goodness.
