Hello from Las Vegas

Hi, Everyone! We don't have chickens yet but will be moving to a home with a suitable yard next year. I'm a little bit of a control freak, so I have to know the right way to do it all before we even begin! Hubby and I are empty nesters now that our only daughter is married and living in their first home. I am a Master Gardener and have just gotten all the raised beds built and planted and am working on building a greenhouse. All that chicken poop will be put to good use, I assure you! We have two cats and four dogs who are all definitely family so I'm sure the girls will fit into the family just fine. Our run will be enclosed, as the cats are outdoor critters. Hubs is a casino supervisor and I am a retired roulette dealer now working in a WIC clinic. He will be retiring within the next few years and I can see him happily puttering with the coop on his days off - the rest of the time, it will be my baby! Can't wait to start my research - any books that are particularly comprehensive for a newbie? And I will be haunting this site to get lots of advice. Looking forward to getting to know y'all!

You could start with the Learning Center and branch out from there. If you go to "Where am I, Where are you," you can locate and post on your state thread and very likely find like minded chicken people nearby.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. One inexpensive, but very good book worth reading is the Mini Encyclopedia of Chicken Breed and Care by Frances Bassom. It has a lot of good information packed into a relatively small volume. There are some excellent, quick reference charts worth looking at at http://albc-usa.etapwss.com/images/uploads/docs/pickachicken.pdf, http://www.mypetchicken.com/chicken-breeds/breed-list.aspx, and http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html. Also, Murray McMurray has an excellent chick selector tool at http://www.mcmurrayhatchery.com/chick_selector.html to help you select the breeds that are best suited for you.
