My name is Susan Wachter and my husband and I farm in central Illinois. My husband is a grain farmer and I grow produce for the Lincoln Farmer's Market which I also manage. I have been trying to convince my husband to let me have chickens for at least a couple years now and after a few drinks with friends one night he gave in. The next day we started building coop #1. Two weeks later we build coop #2. I have outside runs for both coops. (We have farm dogs that are free range and would eat the chickens in a heartbeat!) I have 5 laying hens (purchased from a neighbor last week) in the small coop and 13 1-month old pullets in the big coop. I am scheduled to receive 26 more on April 28. I have read this forum religiously since getting the chickens and feel much smarter for doing so. I appreciate the diversity and level of knowledge that everyone is willing to share. Thank you to everyone for posting and I will continue to be a dedicated reader.

Hi Susan and welcome to BYC! Looks like you have a great start on the chickens. Lots to learn here and everyone is so nice!

Hi and welcome from California! Looks like you jumped in with both feet. Good luck with your new brood(s)!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I enjoy reading everyone's posts so much. I am really excited, today I got 5 eggs from my hens, that is a record for them. Of course I have only had them for 11 days and everyone is finally settling in to regular routines but I am still just thrilled!!
