Hello, I'm a long-time lurker that just joined to post a question about BSF larvae (posted under the feeding section). I've raised meat rabbits for a couple of years in the suburbs and recently moved to a couple of acres with chicken coops already in place. So I bought 3 feed store chicks to make sure that I wanted chickens before I dove in. We enjoyed these chickens so much that I ordered 15 easter eggers from efowl and also bought 17 jumbo cortunix quail from a local guy.

I am currently raising mealworms in bins and attempted super redworms under my rabbit cages. The regular redworms did incredibly well under my rabbit cages at my last home, but the super worms just didn't take in my new place. But the BSF larvae stepped in and I have many thousand happily devouring my bunny berries. I also have a few kiddie pools with duckweed for the rabbits and fowl (reminds me of another question that I'll post now).

Just wanted to say thanks for all of the great information that I've gotten from you guys and gals over the past few months. I even bought the Brinsea 20 incubator after reading all of the reviews and threads about it on this site.

Welcome to BYC! A lot of us were lurkers before finally joining. It's nice to know that we won't have to explain to you that the Ameraucanas (or Americanas, or Americaunas, etc.) that you bought are actually not Ameraucanas, but Easter Eggers.) Just our of curiosity, what kind of chickens were the 1st three that you bought from the feed store?

Michael, the guy at the feed store had no idea what kind of chicks he was selling. I asked him if he ever got easter eggers and he said, "Ya, those over there are." When asked what color eggs they laid he said "brown." I just laughed and said OK and bought a yellow one and two black ones. They are solid colors and very healthy...well two of them are healthy. I was getting lazy with locking them up at night. Why try to herd/trick them into the coop when they will put themselves up at dusk? Well a raccoon beat me to the coop a couple of weeks ago and one of my black ones was reduced to a couple of piles of feathers. I'm much more vigilant now and after only two nights 3 huge raccoons will not be bothering my chickens ever again.

Ya the whole EE vs Ameraucana thing is interesting. Efowl lists their chicks as "Easter Eggers (Ameraucana). They state that they are Ameraucanas a couple of times...possibly even show quality...but list them as EE's because: "While our Ameraucana Chickens do hold true to the qualities and characteristics recognized by the APA, we do not breed specifically for any particular color and offer a "mixed color" variety, nor do we guarantee any particular colors or color variations of this breed. For this reason, we advertise our Ameraucana Chickens as Easter Eggers."

So I'm happy to call mine EE's.

That's another example of typical hatchery marketing. Nothing wrong with EEs though. They typically outlay their Ameraucana parents and lay eggs in more colors than just blue. They are my granddaughter's favorite chickens as she loves the colored eggs. Sorry about the loss of your chicken and good luck with the rest of your flock.
