Hi everyone,

Just joined--I'm new to the forums, and to having chickens. To be more specific, I haven't actually picked up any chickens yet! I'm pretty adamant about doing well-rounded research before diving into things, even when it's so much more fun to be impulsive. Over the next few weeks I plan to have my coop built, and get my flock started.

Although I've been perusing the forums and articles pretty heavily, I'm always open to suggestions & your valuable input. Anyone with experience in chicken raising in (or near) Maine ... or anywhere with similar climate ... that is willing to share their two cents, I'm all ears!

Cheers,
Jazor

Welcome to BYC!
Maine is such a beautiful state. Good Luck on the coop build! We have a similar climate to you guys (MA). We decided to insulate our coop due to the winters, and since Maine is so harsh in the winter too, insulating your coop may not be a bad idea. Also don't forget that your coop needs good ventilation, even at night, even in the winter. This will keep the smell down. My coop doesn't even smell anymore now that I have adequate ventilation.

Good Luck, I'm glad you are doing your research. Will you be ordering chicks from a hatchery or buying local?

Thank you for the reply! Glad to see some other New Englanders here, should make for quality advice when it comes to environmental variables. To answer your question, I plan to buy locally--as it seems almost everyone around Maine "knows someone with chickens" and they seem rather attainable in my immediate area (small rural town).

If I may ask a question in return, what sort of ventilation have you got? I can reply with photos (once I get home and take some, that is) of the setup I'm working with currently. I will be building a part of my barn into the coop. The obvious issues here will be ventilation and insulation; however, I have power run to the barn already so could rather easily put a lower wattage light bulb in the area for them to help with warming in those frigid January days/nights that are infamous here in Maine.

Cheers!
Welcome to BYC! I suggest browsing the Learning Center for lots of good info, https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and also this thread to find local chicken lovers in your state :) https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/26/where-am-i-where-are-you good luck to you!
Thanks, Liz! I've been spending lots of time in the learning center so far (well before I signed up) and decided that it was time to dive into some community discussion as well. Thanks for the helpful links, I will get familiar with other sections of the site.

Cheers!

I think you should blow up your avatar photo and put it near your chicken coop so predators will get an idea what they will be dealing with.
