Hi all,

We don't have any chickens yet, but hopefully it won't be very long. We have a dozen eggs in the incubator and we are waiting to see if we have any success. In the meantime, we are learning everything we can about keeping chickens in our backyard. One of our biggest concerns is how big of a coop we should buy. We are planning to start with around 6 chickens, but from what we have heard and read it seems that we should plan for at least a dozen. It seems that most people end up adding more and having the extra room upfront seems like a good idea. We would be very interested to hear what other people have to say.

from Alabama. Glad you joined us. You're right, it's best to always build/buy a bigger coop than what you think you'll need cause before you know it you'll run out of room

Good luck with your hatch

Hatching Update:

We candled the eggs last night. From what I could see it looks like at least 8 of the 12 have "the spot". We lost one egg, it leaked and stuck to the egg turner. I had to break it off and throw it away. The other are continuing their journey, with 16 day to go!
