HI, I have joined this group because I am new to the world of raising chickens. To be honest, I was not planning to start this year. My husband who does not appreciate the depth of knowledge it requires to raise healthy chickens basically pushed them on me two weekends ago. We have 6 black sex linked pullets and four more chicks (a few Orpingtons and a barred) due to arrive next week. So I am now in the position of trying to catch up on my research so that we set our flock up for safety and good health. We live in MD on 5 acres, northwest of Baltimore in a semi rural area that has multiple predator risks! I appreciate all the info I have found here at BYC during my google searches!

In MD (AA Co.) . Getting a predator proof coop is number 1. The rest can be a work in progress. I've had more losses to owl/Hawks than any fox, possum, or raccoon. The hardware cloth apron on the coop is the most important. I built fort Knox out of an old shed. A few cinder blocks and a roll of hardware cloth is the easiest quickest way.
