So... my wife started with a couple chicks from a local hatchery (45 lol) last summer. I was not very into it, "sure sure, whatever you want"... Happy wife, happy life right???

Needless to say I've been hooked ever since. Converted a very nice 16x16 wood shed into a chicken coop yay! Our 3 year old son loves looking for eggs. This hobby has become quite the obession to us. Started out with a little giant foam incubator, graduated to a GQF sportsmans, quickly realizing still not enough space. Now we are having a custom incubator and hatcher build that should put us over the 1,000 egg capacity. :)

This winter we started getting into the whole shipping rare breeds, actually ordered a couple dozen through one of the members here. Working on building flocks of Bielefelders, Swedish Flower Hens, Jubilee and Lavender orpingtons.

Anyway, just wanted to introduce ourselves to the community that has provided so much information. Been lurking around for almost a year now, figured we'd finally say hello.

Sounds like you will be adding some very pretty birds to your flock soon! Good luck with all your hatches too. Hatching can be so much fun and a great learning experience.

Make yourself at home here and we do welcome you to our flock!

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! Wow it seems the hatching bug has really caught you there with new incubator with a 1,000 egg capacity!! Many of us were lurkers before joining up I was one for two years and so wish I had done it much sooner. Wishing you the very best of luck with your hatching and hope you enjoy BYC, I am sure you will everyone here to help and very friendly :frow

Yeah we caught the hatching bug hard! Well more or less myself. I am a business analyst by day, so any hobbies I find outside of work I tend to obsess. :)

My wife and I loooooooove hatching chicks, it's such an addicting thing. It's actually turned into a fairly quickly growing side business, hence the incubators... I partnered up with a local chicken farmer who builds coops, and can provide around 500 eggs a week for hatching.

I do have a question for you guys, maybe I should make a new thread. Or maybe you know of someone who has already asked, I can't find much on this subject. Anyway:

When having multiple breeds that you want to keep separate, what is the preferred method of segregation? Would a large barn style coop, with stalls, runs coming off the rear, be wiser than having standalone 10x10 coops with a run around it? Right now we have 5 breeds that I want to keep separate, with around 20-25 chickens in each coop. I see both as really being around the same cost, however, the larger barn style one with stalls in more appealing to me, since I get to build it all. One sounds better than 4. Don't even get me started on chicken tractors, gah. I just can't decide, so I guess I'll pick some experienced folks brains.
