Hello from minnesota

Hi. I'm a newbie to having chickens. I got my first 6 chickens last June. I'm loving having chickens. I in middle of making plans on building a permanent coop right now i have a metal shed that is not the greatest. I'm been had a few of my chickens get frost bite. In the spring I'm getting 5 more chickens and I'm thinking of getting a couple buff geese. I'm totally new to this and enjoy learning about what others do!

Minnesota does get cold. I think the small or flat combed breeds are better for escaping frostbite. Whatever type of structure you use for a coop is should be draft free, and have sufficient ventilation - otherwise condensation can fall back on the birds and cause frostbite. Vaseline on combs and wattles can help some.
