Hello everyone! I hail from Missouri (about an hour outside StL) and we are going to be getting some chickens hopefully soon! We have been wanting to do this for years, but never seriously started looking into it until recently. We are possibly moving soon (hopefully we'll know within the month!), so that is the only reason we haven't started quite yet. But once we know which way we're going we will get started! In the meantime I have been reading as many articles and threads as I can here lately because I am just so excited to finally get to start!

Possibly silly question, but if we do end up moving we were going to reuse some old wood fencing on the property to build the coop (yay free!), but with winters here I was worried about that being too drafty. Would it be fine to just use the fence boards attached to the frame for walls or should we put plywood walls and then fencing over that?

G’Day from down under TribeWild :frow Welcome!

Sorry, living in Aus, keeping chickens warm is not something I have experience with but moreso trying to keep them cool. Others will be along shortly and will hopefully be able to help.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. These in particular may be of interest to you:
Topic of the week - Winter chicken keeping
Topic of the Week - Getting Started, Keeping Chickens
Topic of the Week - Keeping the Flock Safe from Predators

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you include your general location on your profile, this will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock when they arrive, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Best wishes and good luck!

Hi and welcome to BYC :frow We're so happy you've decided to join us:ya
boards over frame should do just fine. Make sure you provide plenty of ventilation and keep the roost area as draft free as possible. Keeping birds dry and draft free in winter is key to keeping them healthy. Also wide roosts help protect toes.

Greetings and welcome to BYC Tribewild! So glad you joined us. I think using old fencing on studs will work just fine, as long as the fencing isn't rotted out. Lots before you have done this very thing. Just ge the boards tight or overlap then a bit or even do batten boards over the cracks. Good luck with your move (or not) and your about to start chickeneering adventures!

There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. I recommend at least your state as most folks won't be able to figure out where if you put anything more specific (county, town, street, etc) by itself. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Thanks for the links! I have actually read the 3 articles you linked, which were super helpful, I just didn't know if the idea I had in mind was good to be draft-free. :)
I'll check out the Topic of the Week and the Find your State as well though! I haven't really explored too much of the site beyond the articles right now, so I didn't know about those yet!
