Hi, I'm Don from Marlboro NJ. We live on 6 acres in a very rural setting. 4 are heavily wooded and "infested" with a beautiful herd of Whitetail Deer. We have a 19 year old Yorkie named Dolly, 2 other dogs, some cats and all the usual visiting wildlife.

We are trying to live 100% organic and try to produce as much of our own food as possible from our garden and forest. We grow corn, tomatoes, asparagus, peppers, green beans, lettuces, cabbage, eggplant, herbs, and on and on.

Last spring we decided to raise chickens for fresh eggs. We started out with 6 chicks of various breeds. What we got was Big Red (a RIR rooster). Our hens are a Silkie named Fluffy, Nubia the Barred Rock, and the sisters (3 Ameraucanas). Then we adopted a flock of 14 RIR hens. They came with a large coop, so we added 8 more RIR chicks. They are housed away from the original 6. We've since lost only 1 to a fox and 1 to a hawk. I currently have half a dozen eggs on day 11 in the incubator.

Sounds like chicken math got to you right away. Hope you're finding ways to keep the predators away.

I used to live next to a wooded area, and I loved the Whitetails -- who, in turn, loved all my shrubs, evergreens and flowers. But, it was still thrilling to see them up close and personal.

I applaud your organic gardening efforts. I'm sure you have found chickens produce great fertilizer; that's all I use on my garden.

Welcome to the group!!

Thanks for the warm welcome! I have the original 6 in a covered run, and I free range them when there are dogs around. That definitely keeps the fox away and seems to work on the hawks. The other 18 are closer to the woods and I think I need to work on fox-proofing, once it is warm enough to start digging. I just got a tremendous net, re-purposing from some batting cages. That should work on the hawks.
